Application and Program Guidelines

The Mead Foundation supports organizations dedicated to preserving and improving the environment, the advancement of medical science, and other important social needs.

Environmental organizations supported by the Mead Foundation generally have as their primary emphasis forestry, fisheries and the sustainable use of natural resources in western North America.   The Foundation normally does not fund local or regional environmental organizations outside the western United States.

Scientific and medical organizations supported by the Mead Foundation generally have as their primary emphasis the endocrine system and, in particular, diabetes and its complications.

Funding in other program areas is limited to grant proposals initiated by individual Board members.

The Foundation does not make grants to individuals or for general operating expenses. Please do not send inquiries regarding such funding.

If your proposal meets these program guidelines, you may submit a brief letter outlining your project and needed funding.   We will contact you should we desire a full proposal.   We ask that every consideration be given to presenting the proposal and supporting materials in an environmentally sensitive manner.  Please use two-sided copying when possible, and do not use binders or plastic packaging.   One copy of the proposal will suffice.

The Foundation Board meets in early January, June and October.  In order for a proposal to be considered at a particular meeting, inquiries should be initiated about three months prior to the meeting date.

A complete proposal, if requested, would also include the following:

  • A more detailed description of the project (3-5 pages) with supporting documentation
  • A project budget and time frame
  • Other funding sources
  • A copy of your IRS qualified tax exemption letter
  • A list of staff and directors associated with the project (including affiliation or expertise)
  • A current financial statement showing assets, liabilities, income and expenses and an annual report if available.
